Malvern MP backs Prime Minister's call for early General Election

Malvern Editorial 18th Apr, 2017

MALVERN’S MP Harriett Baldwin has pledged her support to Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan to ask Parliament for permission to call an early General Election.

Mrs May revealed her proposals during a statement in Downing Street this morning (Tuesday) and will ask Parliament to vote in favour of the plans tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Prime Minister said a vote was needed ahead of the negotiations to leave the European Union which are expected to begin later this year.

“We need a general election and we need one now. We have at this moment a one off chance to get this done,” she said.

“I have only recently and reluctantly come to this conclusion.

“Since I became prime minister I’ve said there should be no election until 2020, but now I have concluded that the only way to guarantee certainty and security for the years ahead is to hold this election and seek your support for the decisions we must take,” she added.

Speaking after the announcement, Mrs Baldwin said she supported Mrs May’s justification for an early election and would vote in favour.

She added: “The Prime Minister has reluctantly decided upon reflection to call a general election to secure a clear mandate for her government to get the best possible deal for the United Kingdom as we leave the European Union and deliver a strong future for our country based on Conservative principles.

“Tomorrow the House of Commons will vote on this issue and I look forward to working to secure this legislation, and then gaining the support of the country and the people of West Worcestershire on June 8.”
