Malvern Editorial 1st Apr, 2024   0

A HOST of brand new events have been revealed across Worcester and Malvern to celebrate the life and music of Worcestershire legend Sir Edward Elgar.

The Elgar Festival will run across the county between Monday, May 27 and Sunday, June 2.

New events include teaming up with the Morgan Sports Car Club and Malvern Hills District Council for the festival to be the finishing point for the iconic car’s rally around The Elgar Route.

Rally members will depart from the Morgan Motor Factory at 10.30am on Tuesday, May 28 and will finish at Elgar’s birthplace at The Firs in Worcester at 3.30pm, in time for the final session of a conducting masterclass.

Composer Steve Elcock will be joined by festival director Kenneth Woods at 1.30pm on Thursday, May 30 at The Firs to explore his experiences as a self-taught composer.

Then on May 31, violinist Esther Abrami will be at Huntingdon Hall at 1pm, playing a programme including Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’ alongside a selection of Elgar miniatures.

And internationally-renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber will be at the Museum of Royal Worcester at 11am on Sunday, June 2, to share a lifetime of insights and memories about the Elgar Cello Concerto.

The Festival was launched in 2018 by decree of Worcester City Council and is traditionally held on the weekend closest to Elgar’s birthday, June 2.

This year’s festival will take place across Worcestershire and will combine orchestral, chamber, vocal, choral and relaxed concerts with exhibitions and talks to celebrate the life and music of Sir Edward Elgar.
