POLICE patrol bases will be reinstated in Malvern as chiefs look to put an end to ‘isolation in the town’.
In September 2013 significant savings had to be made in the force and it was decided neighbouring Ledbury would operate as a central base for officers serving Malvern, Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye.
But following a review the system will be changed and as of March 2 ten officers will remain in Ledbury while 20 will be based in Malvern and 15 in Ross.
Police have said the new arrangements will not fundamentally change how many officers serve each area, it simply means those who served Malvern and Ross will now operate from within the towns.
Bill Longmore, West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “I was not happy with the policing situation with Ross-on-Wye and Malvern.
“The towns felt a bit isolated from Ledbury and I was keen to make sure policing arrangements were reviewed. It did not seem to be working as well with the officers based in Ledbury.
“I asked the Chief Constable to look at it again and to his credit and that of the force, I think they have come up with a solution that, I think, will mean a better service for local residents and businesses.”
Supt Kevin Purcell, police commander for South Worcestershire, added: “I see this as offering both Herefordshire and South Worcestershire the best opportunity of serving local people.
“I applaud the way we were open minded and gave the Ledbury option a sensible consideration.
“I am however very supportive of the decision made as it will ensure that I am best able to ensure proactive patrols are targeted on the Malvern Hills district.”
