Malvern residents urged to nominate litter hot-spots for Great British Spring Clean

RESIDENTS are being urged to nominate their litter hot-spots as staff and councillors at Malvern Hills District Council prepare to take part in the Great British Spring Clean.

The national campaign aims to bring communities together to clean up litter in their area.

Organisers hope to inspire 500,000 people to take part.

The Great British Spring Clean follows on from last year’s Clean for the Queen campaign in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday which saw residents, staff and councillors join forces to clean up parts of the district blighted by litter.

In total, about 200 bags of rubbish were picked up.

This time the council will once again be sending out its litter ‘hit squads’ – made up of residents, staff and councillors, to help keep the area clean on top of the council’s usual litter picking activities.

Coun Bronwen Behan, portfolio holder for the environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean.

“Unfortunately litter remains a problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend over £700 million on street cleaning services every year.

“The campaign offers people the chance to meet new people, get out and about in the fresh air, and make a positive impact on the environment.

“We encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part and do their bit to help.”

Residents can nominate a potential ‘grot spot’ they would like the team to consider tackling by posting suggestions on the Malvern Hills District Council Facebook page, tweeting them to @MalvernHills_DC or emailing [email protected] by Friday, February 17.

Equipment is also available to loan to local community groups who would like to conduct their own litter picks as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Anyone interested should contact [email protected] by the same date.
