Malvern schoolchildren explore democracy with their MP

CHILDREN at a primary school in Malvern have been treated to a democracy masterclass by their local MP recently.

Pupils at Great Malvern Primary were led in debate by West Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin during a school assembley.

Her work at the House of Commons was the topic of discussion as she met with the pupil parliament who have been elected this year to represent the student body.

Dame Harriett also toured the school with head teacher Sarah Green and she offered her support to the popular primary school as it works to improve school attendance at the start of a new academic year.

The MP said: “It is always a joy to visit our local primary schools, and I was delighted to take part in an assembly which showed pupils how voting works first-hand.

“We had a passionate debate and I was impressed at how many young people were prepared to stand up and make their views known, out loud, in front of the school.

“It’s also great to see democracy thriving under the stewardship of head teacher Sarah Green, with the formation of a pupil parliament and I hope that in the near future, the school will be able to return the honour and come to visit me at my place of work.”
