A MALVERN College maths teacher took on the Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge this weekend, a continuous 100km endurance event along one of Wales’ most dramatic coastlines, in honour of his mother and to raise vital awareness for Myeloma UK.
Jonny Stewart, age 30, lined up for the challenge after completing a remarkable series of local endurance feats designed to prepare him for the Gower’s rugged coastal terrain.
It was the culmination of months of training inspired by his mother Judith, who was diagnosed with myeloma early last year.
Myeloma is a rare and incurable blood cancer, and while treatment cannot cure the disease, it can provide periods of remission. Judith has been undergoing regular treatment for the past year, facing it with a quiet, determined resilience.
Jonny said: “My mother has been amazing throughout her treatment, and I wanted to do something that reflects her strength. Supporting Myeloma UK means a huge amount to our family.
“The fundraiser is currently just over £4,700 and I am so grateful to anyone who has supported in any way.”
To build towards the Gower Peninsula Ultra, he set himself four major endurance challenges rooted in his school and local community, that includes a four‑hour stair‑climbing time trial inside his boarding house at Malvern College, scaling 552 floors and more than 1,900m of elevation.
