Malvern walkers pull in the punters with popular beer

A BEER named after a group of Malvern fund-raisers pulled in the punters and sold out in less than a week.

Team Zulu, which are hoping to rake in thousands of pounds for St Richard’s Hospice, had the drink put in the Nag’s Head.

And Tarquin Shaw-Young, who founded the group, said he was delighted to find out that it had all been snapped up.

“I don’t know how many barrels they had but it had gone very, very quickly,” he said.

“It looked very good on the pump and when we were at the bar hearing people say ‘two or three Team Zulu’s please’ it was quite surreal.”

The beer caps off a memorable month for the walkers, who featured on BBC Radio 4 programme, Ramblings, with Clare Balding on June 11 and also completed the Worcestershire Way on June 19.

Team Zulu, which has been together for five years, helped raise more than £3,000 as part of the 34-mile walk, which sees competitors travel from Bewdley through the county and end in Malvern.

He added: “It was a really lovely day. Every year we do it we try to do something a bit different but it is all about raising money for the charity aswell.

“At the end by the Malvern Hills it is tough, it is a real barrier. That is the ‘wall of the walk’, the end is in sight, you can smell the beer and you just keep going really.”

Alison Parkes, senior fund-raiser at St Richard’s Hospice, said: “It was a great event with team spirit and camaraderie among the walkers taking part.

“It is a tough challenge but we have many walkers come back year after year to put themselves to the test and raise funds to help our patient care.”
