Mayor raises over £10,00 for St Richard's Hospice

THE OUTGOING Mayor of Malvern has donated over £10,000 to St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester.

This sum was made up of funds which were either paid directly to the Hospice or through Malvern Town Council, with details of the latter having recently been made available to the Hospice.

Commenting on the sum raised for St Richards during his mayoral year, Coun Clive Hooper said, “I was delighted that we were able to raise over £10,000 for this splendid and well-respected charity.

“I had hoped that even more could have been raised during the year, but regrettably we did not have either the traditional Mayor’s Bonanza or the usual quiz night which have been organised in previous years.

“Had those events been able to take place, I do believe that we would have had at least another £3,500 to hand over to St Richard’s.”

Coun Hooper said it was the most memorable fundraising year.

It started with a bucket collection for a ‘Bands in the Park’ Sunday afternoon event in July 2023 raising £420.

This was followed by the Christmas Lights Switch-On Festival in November producing a further £1,900, including bucket collections.

The Christmas concert raised £200, followed by a very successful Sunday lunch at St Richard’s in February 2024 raising an impressive £2,244, and the Civic Service held in Christ Church in Malvern produced a retiring collection of £460.

Coun  Hooper added: ” I am immensely grateful to everyone who supported my charity, both residents in Malvern and visitors from further afield.

“The funds raised will provide much needed support for the Hospice where, each year, the team supports more than 3000 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

“It costs over £10 million to run the Hospice and that includes patient care and all the necessary support services.”

Jenny Cowpe, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “What a fantastic result, as well as raising this incredible amount, many more people have been made aware of the Hospice and the services it provides to our communities, and we are sure that this publicity will enable some who might not otherwise have done so to come to us for our care.”

“It is only through our wonderful supporters that we are able to continue to provide our care, particularly at the present time, and we are immensely grateful to Coun Hooper for making us his charity of the year. “
