A MEMORIAL day in honour of a much-loved mother raised more than £5,000 for St Richard’s Hospice.

The family of Shirley Sparrey held a special day full of activities in July to celebrate her life.

Shirley, a mother of three, died aged 63 at the end of last year after a long struggle with cancer and the hospice cared for her during her battle. She worked as a cook at Malvern St James Girls School for more than 20 years.

The memorial day was held at the Bakery Inn on Worcester Road from 10.30am until late and featured a bouncy castle, BBQ, face painting, raffles, white elephant, tombola, jumble sales, nearly new stall, cake stall and an evening disco.

A sponsored walk also took place from Worcester’s New Road cricket ground to the Bakery Inn from 7am on the same day, as well as a special football match at Dyson Perrins High School at 10.30am.

The two teams, Shirl’s Stars and O’Shea’s 11, were named after Shirley.

In total they raised £5,042.45.

Shirley’s daughter Sarah Lonsdale told the Observer: “On behalf of myself and my family, we would like to thank everyone who helped us out and a special thank you to Peppasound Disco.

“We’d also like to thank everyone who came and shared our day for our beautiful mum.”
