Mike Charles resigns as Malvern town councillor

Malvern Editorial 5th Jan, 2017   0

MIKE Charles has resigned as a Malvern town councillor.

Deputy Mayor Hannah Campbell tweeted the news earlier today (Thursday) before Malvern Town Council confirmed the news to the Observer.

Mr Charles, who serves the Dyson Perrins ward,  has been on Malvern Town Council for more than ten years.

Steps are being taken to replace him with the possibility of a by-election taking place.

Town clerk Linda Blake has written to all fellow councillors informing them of Mr Charles’s resignation.

The letter, given to the Observer, reads: “Just to let you all know that Mike Charles submitted his resignation as a Town Councillor to the Mayor effective of Monday 2 January 2017.

“Steps will now be taken to advertise and fill the vacancy.

“As is usual, an advert will be placed in local newspapers to advertise the vacancy within the next couple of weeks and electors from Dyson Perrins Ward will then have an opportunity to call a by-election should they wish.

“If no by-election is called then the vacancy will be filled by co-option.”

Mr Charles made Observer headlines last year when he called for Malvern Town Council to undergo a major review of its operations following the resignation of the council’s then events co-ordinator.

But his calls, which was backed by county councillor Paul Tuthill, was refused at a full council meeting.
