MORE than 90 per cent of schools across Worcestershire have now widely reopened for reception and years one and six, along with the children of key workers.

The latest figures from the county council show attendance levels are currently averaging at 15.5 per cent of the proportion of children in school which, although seemingly small, is higher than the national average of 11.6 per cent.

The authority said it was incredibly appreciative of the work that schools and settings have done since lockdown began on March 23 and thanked all staff and students, along with the team at Worcestershire Children First.

Dr Catherine Driscoll, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Children First, said: “I’m so pleased to be hearing positive feedback from staff and students about their experiences returning to school.

“Everyone involved in the preparation of the return to school has worked so hard to make it all come together in Worcestershire, and there’s nothing more rewarding than the smiles on the faces of our students and teachers.”

She said the figures were positive and down to the great collaboration between Worcestershire Children First and the county council.

Coun Marcus Hart, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Education and Skills, visited three schools across Worcestershire to see first hand the adaptations which had been made by staff and students.

He is planning to visit more schools over the coming weeks and thanked the local authority for the amount of tireless work and preparation it had put in.

Primary Schools in England have been re-opened to all reception, year one and year six students since June 1.

Secondary schools were open across the county for years ten and 12 from June 15.
