WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has offered her support to local people who are leading a fund-raising campaign to preserve the historic stained-glass windows at Great Malvern Priory.
The MP met with volunteers who are leading the project to obtain £12 million to conserve the historic windows and create facilities for many generations to come.
Great Malvern Priory fund-raisers have already secured nearly £700,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to prepare a full bid into the Heritage Fund but it will have to find a further £1.5 million of match funding to unlock the project.
The church has sat at the heart of the town for more than 900 years and draws visitors from all over the world to see the stained glass windows which date back to the 15th century.
Dame Harriett said: “Great Malvern Priory is one of most beautiful churches in Britain and we are rightly proud of its heritage and the work it does in the heart of our community.
“It was great to hear that attendances are up and the church saw a bumper Christmas for visitors. I’m a proud Friend of Great Malvern Priory and I hope that this leads to many more people who will want to support the church and this fund-raising campaign.
“The church has welcomed worshippers for over 900 years, and I am so proud that there are people at the heart of our community who are leading the efforts to ensure that the building stays in great shape for the next millennium.”
