National award for club servant

A DEDICATED volunteer who has played an ‘absolutely vital’ role in keeping the town’s football club afloat has received a prestigious national award.

Margaret Scott, secretary at Malvern Town FC, has won the Football Association and McDonalds Awards Volunteer of the Year Award for Season 2014/2015.

The Callow End resident first got involved with the club about 15 years ago and has since become a familiar face at the Langland Avenue-based ground.

Chris Pinder, managing director of Malvern Town, who nominated her for the award, described Mrs Scott as a ‘formidable woman’ who had become the face of the football club.

“To some people within the administration of football she is Malvern Town,” he said. “It is not the most glamorous of jobs, but without that being done a ball would not get kicked, so she is absolutely vital to what gets done at the club.”

He added: “To win this national award is a huge achievement considering the amount of volunteers there are in grassroots football and she deserves it for all the years of ups and downs she has put up with at the club.”

Mrs Scott, who has carried out a number of jobs at the club – ranging from writing match reports to washing kits for players – said she was surprised to win the award.

But she insisted she had no plans to give it up as she said Mr Pinder’s investment along with success on the pitch last season has put the club in a good place.

“A couple of years ago I really feared the worst,” she said. “But things are definitely heading in the right direction now.

“We must have been one of the highest supported teams in our league.

“We averaged crowds of over 100 for every home game, which is considerable more than what we were getting a few years ago, even when we were in the Southern League, so the whole ambiance of the club has changed completely.”
