Nearly 200 children join 'Big Sing' for charity

NEARLY 200 pupils gathered at a school in Malvern last Thursday (November 23) to sing Christmas songs and provide for charity and local foodbanks.

180 children formed a mass choir at Malvern St James Girls’ School for the ‘Big Sing’, a celebration of children’s voices where Christmas tunes and uplifting songs were performed for over 200 ‘proud’ parents.

Each child was encouraged to bring one or more items to donate to The Trussell Trust Worcester and Malvern Foodbanks as parents and families feel their finances squeezed this Christmas.

MSJ’s prep music coordinator, Mrs Elizabeth MacDonald, who organises the annual charity concert, said: “The Big Sing was a wonderful event, bringing together our local schools and raising awareness of a very important issue that affects so many people in our local community.

“The atmosphere was incredible and all the children sang their hearts out, supported by an audience of family and a representative from The Trussell Trust.

“We collected a huge amount of donations on the day which will be distributed to families in need, this Christmas time.”

Among the schools to join Malvern St James ‘Big Sing’ were Cradley Primary , Suckley Primary, Pitmaston Primary, The Downs Malvern, Welland Primary, Eldersfield Lawn Primary and Madresfield Primary.

Peter Buchanan, Malvern Hills Foodbank chairman told the Observer: “For several years Malvern St James has been a faithful supporter of Malvern Hills Foodbank, often giving us generous harvest collections.

“The Big Sing was no different and on behalf of our clients we would like to thank staff, pupils and others involved for their contributions on this occasion.”
