PLATEFULS of community spirit were served up in Malvern as neighbours on one of the town’s roads came together as part of The Big Lunch.
More than 100 people turned out on Cowleigh Road on Sunday (June 7) to enjoy the event, which was one of thousands being held on streets, gardens and community spaces across the country.
As well as food and drink, there was also entertainment, including flower arranging demonstration and a ballet performance from the local school children.
The aim of The Big Lunch, which is an idea from the Eden Project, is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.
Nick Harmer, who organised the event on Cowleigh Road along with David Head, said: “This is our fourth Big Lunch and the event is becoming an anticipated local event in people’s social calendar.
“It is always great to have the opportunity to spend some quality time with our neighbours on a sunny Sunday afternoon.”
Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project and The Big Lunch, added: “Every community needs people like David Head and Nick Harmer to come forward and organise events like these to help make sure that those who are shy, isolated or new to the area get the opportunity to make friends.
“Although the Big Lunch is just one day, we know that the people of Malvern and everyone else who took part today will create lasting friendships and help to build a real sense of community in their area.”
