WORCESTER’S George Marshall Medical Museum has been given a £2,500 cash boost from Arts Council England to fund a display showcasing artefacts on disability and invisible illness.
The project is aimed at bringing attention to artefacts currently not on display at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital Museum.
It will involve updating catalogue records and the new display, which will be revealed to the public in July.
Those involved with the project will also be developing content for web pages to ensure accessibility for both in-person and online audiences.
It seeks to shed light on hidden stories around disability and invisible illness, offering a greater understanding of these often overlooked aspects of medical history.
Some of the featured artefacts for the project include artificial glass eyes and hearing aids.
And the museum has a collection of ten death masks dating to the early 1800s, which were used to measure bumps on the skull to determine a person’s mental characteristics and personality.
Researcher Emily Beynon said: “I am extremely excited to be working with the museum to add to the discourse and display of objects relating to disabilities and the people associated with them.”
Curator Louise Price added: “We’re thrilled to be able to work with Emily on this project to get more of our collection out of the store, and to encourage new audiences to visit our fantastic museum.”
