New travel book goes continental

A FORMER cruise ship lecturer turned travel writer is on the crest of a wave after the launch of her new book.

Elizabeth Adlam taught biology on the cruise line for almost 20 years and has written a travel guide explaining the geological history of North America, an asteroid strike 65 million years ago and even the present day.

The move to write the ‘travelling companion’ came after Mrs Adlam was urged to do so by her daughter.

“It was my younger daughter who triggered it,” she told The Observer. “She said why don’t you write some of this up in a book, you have got all this information, you have spent hours on it so why not write it up?

“So I have written a guide for the curious traveller. It is a book for anyone who wants to learn how this most fascinating of continents was formed.

“It takes the reader on an historical journey.”

Mrs Adlam, who worked on the ships with her husband who was a geography lecturer, officially launched the book on Friday (October 2) at the Swan at Newland.

Also a former university lecturer, Mrs Adlam has previously put together a book on plants and the ‘undying fascination’ they bring with them.

“This travel guide offers an insight into the evolution of life forms from pre-historic ages and dinosaurs to the arrival of the first Europeans,” she added.

“To write it was a real treat and a pleasure.

“It is an opportunity that does not come around very often and I am delighted I have taken it.”
