No changes to be made to traffic flow on Church Street

Malvern Editorial 5th Jun, 2018   0

COUNTY chiefs say there will be no changes made to traffic flow on Church Street in Great Malvern after a mixed reaction from an eight-week public consultation.

More than 500 respondents shared their views on the best way to improve vehicle and pedestrian access on the road.

However, views were equally split and following the consultation it was recommended no changes should be made to Church Street’s traffic flow.

The Abbey Road ‘stub’ will also remain as it is and a ‘gateway’ will not be created due to concerns over the loss of car parking.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member responsible for economy and infrastructure, said: “We are really grateful to all the residents for their thoughts and contributions on this consultation.

“The response rate was very high, which is really positive, but has meant that the report has been delayed, so that all comments could be carefully considered.”

There is the possibility of a potential new public space being created in front of the Priory Church, which came to light during the consultation.

This would address the public space requirement without having to permanently close the Abbey Road ‘stub’.

A full review into traffic measures of on-street parking, taxi rank and loading provisions in the town centre is being proposed.

The possibility of replacing the galvanised streetlight outside Barclays Bank and upgrading of wall mounted lighting in Church Street will also be explored.

It has also been recommended the pavement areas in Church Street are refurbished and the double yellow lines be repainted.

The recommendations also state Edith Walk will undergo further enhancements to improve visibility and user accessibility.

The feasibility, cost and funding sources for the recommendations will now be reviewed and, subject to the final outcome, the work programmed.

A similar process would be followed for any recommendations emerging from the review of traffic management measures.
