NONE of the buildings owned by Worcestershire County Council have the type of aluminium cladding that was used at Grenfell Tower, a review has found.
Council chiefs launched a major review of their fire safety policy back in June in the wake of the devastating tower block fire in North London.
The results of the review have found that none of the County Council’s buildings, including council maintained schools in Worcestershire, used the same aluminium cladding which was used on Grenfell Tower.
It did find curtain walling is used on some of their buildings, but council chiefs have said this does not pose an increased fire risk.
Coun Karen May, cabinet member for Transformation and Commissioning, said: “The safety of our residents, our pupils and our staff is a top priority.
“We have an excellent fire safety record and robust processes are in place here in Worcestershire.
“Following the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower in London we launched an immediate fire safety review.
“On inspection we have found that none of our buildings have the type of aluminium cladding that was used at Grenfell Tower.
“Curtain walling is used on some of our buildings but there is no increased fire risk associated with curtain walling.
“We have no schools or council buildings in Worcestershire that are over 18 metres high or fall into the high risk category as defined by the Government.”
The blaze broke out at the 24 storey tower on June 14 and caused at least 80 deaths and more than 70 injuries. A definitive death toll is not expected until at least 2018.
A total of 57 victims have so far been identified by the Metropolitan Police and coroner and occupants of 23 of the 129 flats died.
