Older People in Worcestershire facing a tough lonely winter

Ian Hughes 22nd Nov, 2025   0

OLDER people across the region are bracing for a difficult winter, with cold weather, rising costs and loneliness creating a “crisis hiding in plain sight.”

National research from Age UK shows that 3.5 million older people are worried about the coming winter, with almost one in ten having no one to turn to for help. Locally, the charity is hearing the same concerns from older residents who are anxious about staying warm, managing bills, and coping alone.

Winter can be especially tough for older people. As temperatures drop, it becomes harder for the body to stay warm, particularly for those living with health conditions or in poorly heated homes. Many worry about turning on the heating, while others face long days without company or support.

The charity provides vital local services that offer advice, friendship and practical help throughout the colder months. This includes but is not limited to, Information and Advice that offers free, confidential guidance on benefits, heating, and financial support; Befriending Service, regular phone calls for companionship and conversation; Local activities and support groups, helping older people stay connected all year round.

The team is urging local people to help older neighbours this winter by checking in on them, lending a hand, or donating to support its work.

Cheif executive Michael Garrett said: “Too many older people are facing the cold, isolation and rising costs alone. With your help, we can ensure no one feels forgotten this winter.”
