Outdoor cinema returns to Malvern

Malvern Editorial 21st Aug, 2017   0

MOVIE fans will have the chance to watch a science-fiction blockbuster, a hit musical and a ground-breaking Disney classic under the stars as part of Malvern’s new outdoor cinema season.

The Lion King, Mamma Mia and Star Wars: A New Hope are all being screened in Priory Park as part of the programme put on by Malvern Hills District Council.

All three films have been chosen for their significance in cinema history or because they are nearing a landmark anniversary.

The Lion King is being shown on Sunday, September 3 and was the first Disney animated feature film to be based on an original story.

It has been placed in the United States National Film Registry for being ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.

Mamma Mia! turns ten next year and a sequel is also scheduled for release in July 2018 making it the perfect time to rediscover why it was the highest grossing film in the UK upon its release.

It is being screened on Sunday, September 17.

Star Wars: A New Hope incredibly is 40 years old this year and sparked a franchise which is still going strong today with the latest installment The Last Jedi, due in cinemas in December.

Fans can catch up on where it all started on Sunday, October 1 and also mark the start of this year’s Malvern Festival of Innovation.

Coun David Chambers, Leader of the Council and responsible for economy on Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Our outdoor cinema season has proved popular in previous years and this latest line-up of blockbuster films is our best yet.

“So grab yourself a chair and a blanket and come and enjoy some classic cinema in the beautiful surroundings of Priory Park.”

Tickets cost £10 or £7.50 concessions.

Gates open for all films at 7.30pm with screenings starting at 8pm.

Film-goers are advised to bring their own chairs and blankets and refreshments will be available on the night.
