A MALVERN teenager is hoping to follow in his famous uncle’s footsteps after he landed the starring role in a TV film.
Paul Omar Elkan Agyei, known as Omar, secured the part of Akuna in ‘King for a Term’, which will be shown on Sky TV, as the youngster looks to emulate the feat of his uncle, Hollywood superstar Idris Elba.
The 12-year-old moved to the town from London and said he is ‘very excited’ to land the role in the production, which is based on the early life of Idris.
Omar, a student at Bishop Perowne CofE College in Worcester, said: “I am really into acting and find it all very exciting.
“It is also pretty hectic, I went to London one weekend to rehearse and they had changed the script and I had to learn it really quickly.
“I have been going back and forth to London for rehearsals and at one point stayed there for four days for filming. There are lots of other children there playing pupils in the school.
“It is really cool and I would love to follow in my uncle’s footsteps and be an actor. I think he is great.
The film is about a boy called Akuna who has asthma and has to leave his normal school to go to a specialist one where he can get more help for a term, before becoming the pupils’ leader.
Mark Pollard, headteacher at the college, added: “I am delighted that such a talented young man as Omar is studying at the college which has first-class performing arts department and that he is being recognised for his acting ability.”
