A PHOTOGRAPHER in Malvern has shared some striking images after capturing a rare natural phenomenon over the hills.

Tarquin Shaw-Young ventured into the hills last Friday evening (October 25), and captured a rare Brocken Spectre like phenomena within the clouds.

A Brocken spectre also called Brocken bow, mountain spectre, or spectre of the Brocken is the magnified shadow of an observer cast in mid air upon any type of cloud opposite a strong light source.

Malvern photographer Tarquin described the natural phenomenon as appearing like ‘dancing fire’, with a perfect projection of the hills radiating from the low hanging clouds at dusk.

He said the occurrence lasted for roughly a minute as he managed to snap three strikingly beautiful images.

Typically the phenomena results in the shadow of the observer being projected onto a cloud with a strong halo-like ring of rainbow-coloured light forming around the dark figure.

It usually appears on misty mountain sides, cloud banks, or can be seen from aircraft. The term, Brocken Spectre, was coined after the phenomenon was captured on the Brocken peak of the Harz Mountains in Germany.

It has long been a local legend after being observed and described by Johann Silberschlag in 1780 and has since featured extensively in literature about the region.
