AUTUMN officially began last Saturday and the signs of the season are there for all to see.

Temperatures are set to drop as we head into October and there is nothing better than a walk among nature in arguably one of the most dramatic changes in the seasons.

Malvern photographer Tarquin Shaw-Young has been out and about with his camera, capturing nature’s vibrant tapestry as leaves turn from green to russet and gold.

We all remember from our childhoods the hours spent making holes in conkers, threading shoelaces through and playing this very traditionally English game.

Possibly even more hours were spent attempting questionable techniques to ‘harden’ the conker’ – through cooking it in the oven, freezing it or soaking it in vinegar – did any of them actually work?

You seldom see children playing conkers anymore but they – in their prickly outer shells – still fall from the trees, mostly nowadays left dormant on the ground.

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, nature’s grand finale unfolds. Trees that once bore lush green canopies now burst forth with fiery foliage, their leaves igniting the landscape with shades of red, orange, and yellow. The Malvern Hills become a symphony of color, a testament to the artist’s touch that is the changing season.

Autumn also brings with it bountiful baskets of fruit and veg – it’s harvest time in the garden, on allotments and in the wild.

Walking through the Malvern Hills in autumn is like strolling through a dreamscape. The crunch of leaves underfoot is a soothing soundtrack, and the cool breeze carries the scent of earth and decay, a reminder of the cycle of life.

Every step offers a new vista, a fresh perspective on the beauty of this ancient landscape.

Autumn in the Malvern Hills is a reminder of nature’s enduring splendor and its ability to captivate our senses, reminding us of the profound beauty in the simple act of being present in the world.
