Plaque unveiled at Malvern St James' Girls School to mark more than a century of education

A PLAQUE was unveiled at Malvern St James Girls’ School in recognition of its teaching children for a century at its current site, writes Natalia Lejzak.

Malvern Civic Society chairman Andrew Huntley, who performed the ceremony, said it was a particular pleasure for him to be celebrating this anniversary as his daughter and cousins were educated at the school and his wife taught there for 15 years.

The school was founded in 1893 with the vision of establishing major schools for girls.

In 1919, shortly after women over 30 gained the right to vote, the school relocated into the current bigger building, re-emphasising its commitment to the education of girls and young women.

An Independent Schools Inspection in 2017 graded St James as ‘excellent’, adding it ensured a constant focus on sport and music as part of school life.

Mr Huntley said: “The beating heart of the school is, or course, not the building but the girls.”

He also talked about the current ‘Old Girls magazine’ which contained stories of the 100 Malvern Alumnae from the foundation schools of St James.
