Police issue Gullet Quarry swimming warning four years on from two deaths

Malvern Editorial 26th May, 2017   0

POLICE in Malvern are warning people of the risks of swimming in the Gullet Quarry after two men died in the lake four years ago.

With sunshine forecast for the Bank Holiday weekend, the team will be continuing their regular patrols of the area throughout the summer and engaging with anyone who may be putting their life at risk by swimming in the quarry.

A number of dangers associated with the quarry include a risk of submerged rocks and cold water shocks.

Cold water shocks affect a person’s ability to swim and reach safety if experiencing difficulties.

Immersion in cold water leads to rapid cooling of the skin, gasping, hyperventilation and the restriction of blood flow.

This in turn can lead to panic as muscle strength decreases due to lack of blood flow, causing fatigue and reduced control over body movements causing potentially life-threatening problems.

Inspector Deborah Sanders of West Mercia Police said: “We are dedicated to protecting the local community from the risks involved with swimming in open water.

“We will continue to educate people about the risks of cold water shock and that swimming in Gullet Quarry is not safe and can put them and others in serious danger.

“I would also like to remind people that swimming in the quarry is prohibited under section 38 of the Malvern Hills Trust Byelaws and can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £500.

“We do not want to stop anyone from enjoying this natural beauty spot, but we urge people to listen to our advice and to do so in a safe and responsible way.”

The Malvern Hills Trust, formerly the Conservators, commissioned the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to produce a report on safety at the quarry following the tragic deaths of two young men in 2013.

A number of physical safety measures were recommended and implemented, such as fencing and new signage in the area.

Trust wardens will also be making additional patrols during hot summer days to advise people of the dangers from swimming in cold water.

They have also sent letters to town schools to raise young people’s awareness that swimming in Gullet Quarry is not safe.

The Trust’s byelaw states: “No person shall bathe in any pond, lake or stream on the Hills where bathing has been prohibited by notice conspicuously displayed.”
