POLICE are urging visitors to Worcester’s Victorian Christmas Fayre to be aware of pickpockets and bogus charity workers.
The event – which runs from Thursday, November 30 to Sunday, December 3 – is set to bring in large crowds and therefore invites opportunist thieves and scammers who prey on visitors.
As a result, West Mercia Police have issued various pieces of advice on avoiding falling victim to such crimes.
Chief Inspector David Troth said: “We really want people to enjoy their time when heading into the city centre for the Victorian Fayre but by taking simple steps, you can avoid becoming a victim of crime.
“Please remember that all genuine charity workers should have legitimate ID and documentation on them, as well as a registered charity number which can be checked and verified.
“If you suspect they may not be genuine, then please contact the police.
“Pick pocketers like to take advantage of crowded events such as this and by following this useful advice you can help protect your belongings.”
Here are the police’s tips for staying safe:
DO
- Do keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times
- Do carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest
- Do return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it
- Do use a purse that’s difficult to open. One that zips or snaps shut is best, and keep it closed
- Do use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash
- Do conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge
- Do keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen
DO NOT
- Don’t hang stuff on the back of a bench
- Don’t leave anything on the back of a pushchair
- Don’t place your belongings out of sight on the floor
