Police say Malvern man's attempts to avoid speeding prosecution were 'bonkers'

A MALVERN man’s attempts to avoid prosecution for a speeding offence has been deemed ‘bonkers’ by police officers in Warwickshire.

The force shared the story of a 44-year-old Malvern man who had received a notice through the post requiring him to identify the driver of a vehicle registered to his address after it was clocked speeding.

The vehicle registered to his address was caught doing 65 mph in a 50 mph zone on the M42 near Tamworth in Arden on July 15, 2023.

Instead of providing the required information, he sent officers a 65 page document claiming fraud, and referencing a parking fine. He also provided an exhibit of the insanity of tax entitled ‘There is a loaf of bread on Morrisons Shelf’.

Following the incident, the 44-year-old was sentenced for failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver when required by Warwickshire Magistrates on January 16, 2024.

He was fined £660 and received six points on his licence. The Malvern man is one of many Worcestershire residents to attempt to avoid prosecution for speeding fines according to Warwickshire

Police’s investigations into the offences recently.

Alison Treharne, Warwickshire Police Road Safety Unit said: “Despite their attempts to avoid accountability for speeding on a road, this approach has always failed at Court.

“Sadly for them, if they had cooperated with us and provided the driver’s details when required, then the most likely outcome would be for the driver to be offered a speed awareness course.

“Our appeal to the public is, to please comply with the Road Traffic legislation, and do not be taken in by bogus material on the internet that will result in a much more costly outcome.”

Those eligible for a speed awareness course can attend one every three years, or complete a conditional offer of a £100 fine and three points on their licence.
