ANIMAL welfare protesters staged a demonstration against the culling of badgers outside the Three Counties Showground in Malvern.
The protesters from the Worcestershire Vegan Action group carried placards and banners and several of them wore badger suits outside the showground urging showgoers to oppose the cull.
Ronald Lee, communications officer for Worcestershire Vegan Action, said: “The demonstrators gave out hundreds of leaflets to people going into the show and were very pleased at the considerable support they received from members of the public, including many toots of agreement from passing motorists.
“Thousands of badgers have already been shot in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and several other counties in the last four years, and now it is feared the cull will be extended to Worcestershire.
“The government states the reason for the badger cull is to prevent the spread of TB in cattle, but there is a very large amount of evidence that it will not be effective in doing this and could well make the problem worse.”
The Government has previously defended the badger cull programme and said it was part of a 25 year strategy to eradicate Bovine TB.
They also said their culling programme in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Dorset have all been successful in meeting their targets.
