Protest against PM's proroguing of Parliament to be held in Malvern this evening

A MALVERN district councillor is urging residents to join an organised protest this evening (August 29) against the prorogation of Parliament by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Malvern Hills District Labour Councillor Samantha Charles has organised the protest at 6pm at the top of Church Street in Malvern by Belle Vue Island.

Coun Charles said: “Please join us to protest the undemocratic proroguing of Parliament by unelected Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an attempt to force through a no-deal Brexit with dire consequences for our country.

“No one voted for this. Please bring banners, friends and family, all welcome.”

This follows the PM’s decision on Wednesday morning, August 28, to set in motion the suspension of UK Parliament.

Mr Johnson has decided there will be a new Parliamentary session from October 14 with the UK scheduled to leave the European Union on October 31.

The PM argues a new Parliamentary session needs to be opened so the Government can map out its plans for the term, which include investing in the NHS, dealing with violent crime and cutting the cost of living.

He has come under fire for both the decision and the length of time – some five weeks – that Parliament will be prorogued for.

Coun Charles plans to march down Church Street to Priory Park if weather allows.

An e-petition on the Government’s website demanding Parliament not be suspended reached more than a million signatures in under a day.
