Pupils show they have an interest in voting

ST JAMES students got to take part in their own mock elections thanks to the Malvern MP.

Harriett Baldwin launched the campaign at the girls’ school as part of the MSJ Mock Election Week, a project led by the girls, for the girls.

She then participated in a question and answer session with pupils before speaking about the need to elect more women into Parliament and for more young people to vote in the upcoming elections.

Headmistress Patricia Woodhouse said it was fantastic to see the school filled with voters and politicians of the future and to have a successful female role model they could follow regardless of which party they chose to vote for.

She added: “I am immensely proud of the girls for showing their political engagement and for encouraging others not to waste their right to vote.”

Mrs Baldwin said 60 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds did not vote in the last election and it was essential they got the message across of the importance of people having their say on how the country was run.

She added: “It was great to be invited to talk to these young women who have clearly caught the election bug.

“As we mark International Women’s Day, I am especially pleased to see them take such a keen interest in current affairs.

“The mock election is a great way to get young people engaged in politics and I chatted to the students and listened to their views on the issues that most affect them.”
