Pupils win the hot debates

MALVERN St James pupils talked the talk in the latest round of the ESU Public Speaking Competition.

The pupils managed to land themselves first and second place in the event held at the Royal Grammar School, in Worcester.

The first team debated the question ‘does intervention from western states fuel terrorism?’ with Phoebe Nairn taking the position of chair, Jenny Gallagher as speaker and Fiyin Durojaiye as questioner.

The second team consisted of Imy Townsend as chair, Alex Knapper as speaker and Chloe Parker as questioner – they debated the controversial topic of pre-natal selection.

Unfortunately competition rules meant only the first team would be able to go through to the next round being held in the Guild Hall, in Worcester, on Sunday (March 15).

As well as this, Phoebe Nairn picked up the Best Chair Award while Chloe Parker won the Best Questioner Award.

Mrs Shepherd, English teacher in charge of debating, said: “This is a wonderful result and we are very proud of our debating teams.

“We wish the girls every success in the next stage of the competition, when they will be considering the view ‘celebrities have a right not to be taken for role models’.”
