MORE than 35,000 people attended the popular Welland Steam and Country Rally.

The popular fair saw a record number of visitors attend the rally from Friday (July 29) to Sunday (July 31), which has run every year since 1964 drawing steam enthusiasts and exhibitors from all over the world.

The heritage event offered a wide range of attractions including steam engines, classic motorbikes, military vehicles and a farmers market.

A group of Rotarians staffed the entrance gates where there were six backed up lanes full of vehicles gearing up for the popular fair.

Martin Perry, club president of the Rotary Club of Ledbury said everyone was in good humour including Harrison Bear, the Rotary mascot who promoted the eradication of polio worldwide.

Event organiser Alan Prout said the event had been a huge success following the heavy downpour at last year’s show, which resulted in the family fair being closed early.

Malvern’s MP Harriett Baldwin, who opened the fair with Mr Prout said: “Everyone was relieved to see the sun shining on Friday at the formal opening of what has to be one of the county’s premier visitor attractions.

“I was impressed by the growing range of exhibits offering so much more for visitors at this wonderful Worcestershire attraction.

“The gathering has been a mecca for steam enthusiasts, but growing attractions like the antique motorbikes and scooters show there is an ever-increasing interest for the show.”
