Report highlights concerns after care home inspection

A CARE home in Upton has come under fire after a report raised a number of concerns and feared for the safety of its residents.

An unannounced inspection by Care Quality Commission (CQC) on April 27 and 28 found The Boynes Care Centre was not always safe, effective, caring, responsive or well-led.

The report also said the Upper Hook Road site, which is run by St Cloud Care and caters for the elderly, did not always deliver people’s care ‘in a dignified way’.

Despite residents saying they felt safe at the home, the report added inspectors felt workers were under pressure and the site was short staffed.

“We did not feel that people’s care was delivered in a dignified way,” it said.

“People did not always receive care that was based on their preferences and choices and centred around them as a person.

“We found people’s healthcare needs were not always assessed and care planned and delivered to meet those needs.

“People did not always access other healthcare professionals that provided treatment, advice and guidance to support their health needs and families told us they felt further help was sought when needed.

“People and staff told us they would raise concerns with senior staff or the interim manager, although they did not always raise issues of concern.

“The interim manager made regular checks to monitor the quality of the care that people received.”

Boynes centre is registered to care for 40 people and also houses a respite care unit that specialises in offering families a short break by looking after people living with multiple sclerosis.

A St Cloud Care Limited spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the findings of the CQC report in that the home requires improvement, but no regulations have been breached and no safety, of either residents or staff, have been compromised.

“When services are working through considerable change, both with new regulation criteria and change in management, a period of reflection is necessary.”

She added a lot of comments made in the report were ‘of a positive nature’, and insisted St Cloud Care pride themselves on providing ‘high standards of care’ within the home.
