Riders urged to dig out their old bikes

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to dig out their bikes and put them to use as the warm weather strikes.

A nation-wide scheme, backed by the cycling charity CTC and the Department for Transport, is hoping to urge riders who have cycles to use them on shorter journeys which are typically done by car.

Malvern Cycles, based on Worcester Road, will take part in the ‘Big Bike Revival’, running from Saturday May 23 to Sunday June 7, and are set to put on a host of activities to pedal up the interest.

The two-week event will include bike fixing, bike sessions, LED rides, maintenance lessons, competitions and raffles.

Tanya Trotman, of Malvern Cycles, said: “My belief is that by swapping some of our shorter journeys, which are typically done by car, with a bicycle it can provide far more benefit than most people believe.

“It will improve our health, it gives a better and positive message to our children and we are exercising.

“The schools are finding it difficult to cope with the amount of traffic around term time, and it makes it dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.

“By removing this journey and getting our children to walk or cycle, we improve our roads, their health, both mental and physical, they arrive at school awake and ready for their day.

“Most young people and adults have bikes so let’s start using them.”
