Road safety near schools remains a priority for policing

Malvern Editorial 7th Nov, 2023   0

POLICE in Tenbury Wells have urged motorists to consider how they are parking near schools after carrying out patrols across the area.

Yesterday morning (Monday, November 6), officers from West Mercia’s Tenbury Wells policing team visited Abberley primary school.

During their visit they dropped off one of their ‘mini police officer’ road signs and offered advise and guidance to both teachers and motorists.

The ‘mini police officers’ are road safety signs funded by the region’s police and crime commissioner, John Campion, which are placed outside schools warning passing drivers to slow down and avoid parking on zig-zag markings.

Following the visit to Abberley primary school, officers from Tenbury Wells are encouraging motorists to consider the following questions when parking near a school:

  • Can children be seen to be crossing the road behind your car?
  • Can a wheelchair/pushchair get by on the pavement with your car there?
  • Can an emergency vehicle get through?
  • Can an emergency vehicle park outside a patients house their trying to attend or is your vehicle preventing them?
  • Is it safe for you to park there?

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “There are so many smaller elements to parking outside of a school that we don’t think of everyday.

“We ultimately want to keep everyone safe, ensure people’s happiness, and we understand mornings with younger ones can be hectic.

“This can result in you running later than usual, parking somewhere you possibly shouldn’t or where isn’t necessarily safe for all parties.

“We just ask that you bare in mind these questions and the safety of all children and even adults.”

Road and parking safety appears to be being drilled home by police across West Mercia with consistent visits to local schools in a bid to educate teachers, motorists and especially parents.

It comes in response to various reports of dangerous and inconsiderate parking at drop-off and pick-up times at numerous schools in Worcestershire.
