A LEDGENDARY Led Zeppelin star turned up to rock the Ledbury Rotary Club’s charity concert, helping to raise almost £1,000.

Robert Plant, best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist in the band, turned up to the special event in aid of the Acorns Children’s Hospice at Ledbury’s Market Theatre.

The line-up included solo performances from Tenor Carlos Alfonso and Soprano Livia King, with Ledbury’s own Philip Holland providing piano accompaniment.

Amusing duets created hilarious audience participation, leading to a vibrant and merry atmosphere.

The hauntingly lovely voice of Deborah Rose entranced the audience as she sang her own compositions and during a break was even joined on stage by Robert, a member of the audience, for a duet of Love Hurts, originally written by Felice and Boudeleoux Bryant for Roy Orbison.

Accompanied by guitarist Matt Worley, Deborah and Robert performed the song to rapturous applause.

Rotarian Jan Long said: “Many in the audience began to whisper about the identity of the man with the beard and long curly hair and sure enough theatre-goers had guessed correctly it was global rock star Robert Plant lead vocalist of the famous group Led Zeppelin.

“With the concert at an end, members of the public congregated in the foyer and were able to take photographs and seek autographs.

“With his trademark unruly locks, Robert was gracious and charming, taking time to chat to everyone, reminiscing about the past with bursts of song to the delight of all present.”

Rotarian Derrick Spencer, who helped organise the concert, said he was amazed and delighted to have had the unexpected visit of superstar Robert Plant and his presence would ensure this year’s particular rotary concert was never forgotten.
