Rural Matters campaign to tackle crime in countryside across Worcestershire

Malvern Editorial 8th Jul, 2018   0

WEST Mercia Police has launched a ‘Rural Matters’ campaign to tackle crime in the countryside.

The aim is to encourage people to be more vigilant and report information regarding any suspicious circumstances or crimes they see in their community with colleagues and their local policing team.

Members of the public can set up or join existing schemes such as community Neighbourhood Watch groups, email or ‘whats app’ messaging.

People can also register for the Community Messaging Service (CMS) via the West Mercia Police website, giving information on reported crimes, all of which can be specific to requirement.

Police say the benefit of a watch scheme is the intelligence gathered and reported from the local community.

“Good intelligence can aid investigations and potentially result in disrupting criminals, whether it be seizing a vehicle with no insurance or numerous stop searches,” said a spokesperson.

“The public know their communities they live in better than anyone, so usually will notice anything suspicious. Without the reporting of suspicious circumstances or crimes, the police cannot identify or tackle problem areas.”
