AROUND 60 school leavers, including some from Hanley Castle, The Chase and Dyson Perrins schools in Malvern, attended Worcestershire County Council’s event for the Looking Ahead Programme to help them with employability.

The course consisted of three days at Worcester University’s Lakeside Campus with many talks from employees there and colleagues from companies closely associated with the university.

This helped the visitors, who were all aged between 14 and 16, see the opportunities and aspirations which could be fulfilled at university.

The pupils did not only receive information from talks, but also help from an experienced mentor on a regular basis.

The attendants were made up of Worcestershire County Council’s Looked After Children and pupils who needed help to guide them through the transition at the end of year 11.

Robert Delahay, the manager of Outdoor Activity and Sport at the University of Worcester, said: “After the talks the young people were given the opportunity to take part in an array of outdoor education activities including canoeing, bush craft and team building in the hopes of raising their self-esteem, confidence and resilience.”
