A TALK on artificial intelligence (AI) will be given in Malvern next month by an eminent scientist in the field.

Dr. Petr Somol will give his talk at 7pm on Tuesday, July 1 in Great Malvern Priory following an invitation from former Malvern mayor, councillor Clive Hooper.

Coun Hooper extended the invitation during a visit to Malvern’s Czech twiin town of Marianske Lazne in May 2024.

Dr Somol leads the research and development team at Gen Digital, where he focuses on building advanced AI solutions to protect consumers from a wide spectrum of digital threats, including viruses, malware, scams, fraud and online manipulation.

He will share practical insights and personal advice aimed at younger audience members on how to stay safe online and prepare for a future shaped by intelligent technologies.

Working at the very highest level of the science Dr Somol will explain that the potential of AI is vast and will explore some hopes for the future. He will also highlight some of the critical risks faced in our interactions with the digital world.

The scientist is no stranger to Malvern having worked as a research associate at Cambridge University and with Defence and Evaluation Research Agency (DERA) in Malvern. He visited Malvern in 2012 to attend the signing of the partnership agreement between the two towns. Dr. Somol has also given entertaining talks during Malvern Civic Society events in previous years.

The visit has been arranged and coordinated by BetaDen, the Technology Accelerator based on the Malvern Hills Science Park.
