Space shortage is squeezing the public out of planning meetings

CONCERNS have been raised over the suitability of the chamber used to host meetings by Malvern Hills District Council.

A series of controversial planning debates have seen the Avenue Road site full to capacity in recent weeks, with members of public having to stand due to a lack of seating.

In some cases, residents have had to remain out of the building until the application they have come to see appears before councillors.

Coun John Raine said: “Too often these days this council chamber is found wanting for space and seating.

“What message does the failure to provide space and seating to the public convey?”

Coun David Hughes, leader of the district council, assured the council were doing their best for residents and apologised for any problems caused.

“This council is fully committed to open and transparent public debate to facilitate the public,” he added.

“In these uncertain financial times we have to make best use of the space we have. Most people attending planning meetings attend for specific items and I know the chairman of the meetings does their best to accommodate the public in the room.

“I am aware of the shortcomings of our facilities and we urge the next administration to take this into action.”
