THE CREAM of Malvern’s sporting talent turned out to be recognised at the district’s fifth annual Community Sports Awards.

Stars from rugby, tennis, golf, bowls and many more were among the 200 people who attended the ceremony at Malvern College on Thursday (July 9).

The awards, sponsored by UK Flood Barriers, paid tribute to sporting achievements within Malvern Hills over the past 12 months.

A total of 13 awards were presented throughout the evening, including Young Male and Female Sports Personality of the Year, Inclusive Project of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Worcestershire Rock Choir opened the event, followed by speeches from Freedom Leisure’s Ivan Horsfall Turning and Holly Penwarden, and Natasha Hunt, who was part of the England team which won the Women’s Rugby World Cup last year.

The England rugby star said: “After attending the Malvern Sports Awards I felt completely humbled on my drive home.

“It was great to celebrate the vast sporting success in Malvern with some extremely credible people.

“My particular highlight was Barbara Gibson, the badminton superstar who was competing in the over 70 category and dominating.

“It just goes to show what you can do if you put your mind to it.”

Coun Bronwen Behan, deputy leader of Malvern Hills District Council, added: “A tremendous evening was had by all, celebrating sporting achievements and dedication across the district and recognising local people’s contribution to sport over the past year.

“Many congratulations to all individuals, clubs and teams who were nominated for each of the 13 award categories.

“The council is exceptionally proud to be able to celebrate and reward them.”
