REPAIRS to an historic eighteenth century carriage splash have been completed at a National Trust site near Malvern.
A recent survey of the ten-metre long carriage splash at Croome, which is a feature similar to a ford, showed it was in desperate need of essential repair works, after being damaged from water gouging a section out of it.
Since August, repairs have been carried out by Birch Brothers of Stourport and approximately 20 tonnes of blue lias stone, the same stone that would be been used in the original structure, has been laid.
The 6th Earl of Coventry would have transported his guests around Croome’s parkland in a horse-drawn carriage, taking a scenic route from the woodland across the river.
They would have needed to cross the river at the carriage splash, creating a bit of excitement as the water splashed around them as they sped across it.
Katherine Alker, Croome’s garden and outdoors manager, said: “It’s wonderful to see this important piece of the carriageway circuit repaired.
“The route across the carriage splash links South Park with West Field and is a lovely walk to take in the parkland.”
Croome’s park and lakeside are open from 10am to 5.30pm and Croome Court is open from 11am to 4.30pm every day.
