DRIVERS are being reminded that Stop Means Stop when children are crossing the road.
As part of National Road Safety Week which starts on Monday (November 18), Worcestershire County Council is asking motorists to give road safety their full attention especially as the dark nights draw in. Those walking, cycling, skating and running are also asked to ‘tune in’.
Around 100 school crossing sites exist in the county and posters describing the Highway Code’s rules for school crossing patrols are on display at sites which people have failed to stop at before.
The rules, known as the Four Pole Positions, show when it is safe for motorists to drive and when they should legally stop.
It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act of 1984 not to stop when signalled to do so by a lollipop person, with a potential three points on a driving license, up to a £1,000 fine and disqualification.
Coun John Smith OBE, responsible for highways and transport, said: “Our school crossing patrols do a fantastic job and play an important role in our communities.
“Unfortunately, there are a few inconsiderate and irresponsible people out there that needlessly put lives in danger by ignoring the instructions of our dedicated patrol officers.
“Thankfully, these are very much in the minority but still happen more regularly than they should, which is why we’re continuing to push the Stop Means Stop message this national Road Safety Week.”
