Suckley Quarter Marathon team raises funds for new sensory garden

A MALVERN school has opened a new sensory garden to give pupils a chance to learn about nature.

The Suckley Quarter Marathon (SQM) team, who helped fund the creation of the garden, were invited to cut the ribbon at the official opening at Suckley Primary School.

The all-female race organisation team works with the support of The Hop Shed, which hosts the event, and local landowners to run SQM, a charity race held on the roads and trails around Suckley.

In March 2024, the race raised £3,718.87 for charity, with £2,000 donated to Suckley Primary School to help create the sensory garden.

Race director Lily Price said, “We had a really joyful morning at Suckley School opening the new sensory garden. We are so pleased to be able to help the school we attended as children.

“We had a lot of fun playing in the garden and exploring barefoot with some of the children. It’s very rewarding to help create a garden that will support the wellbeing of pupils for years to come.”

A spokesperson from the school said: “Our sensory garden will benefit all of our children, providing them with a calming, natural environment.

“It’s also an excellent learning space, supporting lessons in a variety of subjects.

“The garden will enhance learning about biodiversity, the five senses, experiential writing, plant life cycles, the seasons, and provide opportunities to study insects and other wildlife up close.

“Sensory gardens are a brilliant all-around teaching tool, as children learn best when they are fully engaged.”
