Support systems for alcohol and drug dependents proving successful for West Mercia

Malvern Editorial 9th Jul, 2025   0

PEOPLE struggling with alcohol dependency across West Mercia are receiving faster and more effective support.

Through West Mercia’s Combatting Drugs Partnership, police and crime commissioner John Campion works with the force and local partners to improve substance misuse services and harm reduction.

The results of this partnership approach are making a real difference to people’s lives. There has been a 10 percent reduction in alcohol-related crime over the last year with data showing alcohol is a factor in 39 per cent of all violent crimes in England. Alcohol also contributes to public disorder and anti-social behaviour.

More people are taking part in services which help to manage addiction and there has also been an increase in the number of people continuing treatment after release from custody or hospital.

Lastly, there has been a rise in people successfully completing treatment, with West Mercia exceeding the national average in some categories.

PCC John Campion said: “Tackling the root causes of crime is beneficial not only for those receiving the treatment and support but for local communities too.

“As Alcohol Awareness Week (JUuly 7 to 13) begins, it’s important to reflect on the progress that has been made, whilst acknowledging there’s still much more to do.

“That’s why I will continue to work closely with partners, to ensure substance misuse services are further embedded into the wider criminal justice and health system in West Mercia to ensure people get the support they need, when they need it.”
