Talk to help preserve Ice Age Ponds was held

A TALK taking the Malvern Worcestershire Wildlife Trust back in time took place to educate them about preserving rare Ice Age Ponds.

Beth Andrews – a Geologist from the Hereford and Worcester Earth Heritage Trust – discussed how ice from retreating glaciers scoured deep ponds and what has been done to protect them.

In 2019, a four year Partnership Project to survey and preserve these valuable and irreplaceable ponds brought together the Earth Heritage Trust, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and The Amphibian and Reptilian Trust.

Around 20% of the ponds in the UK are found in Worcestershire and date back more than 15,000 years ago when mammoths used to roam the area.

Although now protected by DEFRA, some Ice Age ponds have been lost through infilling, ploughing, or digging out for drainage.

The next talk at MWW will take place on December 1st, at 7.30pm and is called ‘The Wildwood and Ancient Woodlands’.
