The Chase School students turn fivers into thousands for St Richard's Hospice

STUDENTS at a Malvern school have raised more than £2,000 to support hospice care.

Pupils from The Chase took part in the Flourishing Fivers campaign run by St Richard’s Hospice and organised a variety of fund-raising events.

Activities included gunge the teacher, car washing, cake sales and bag packing – raising a tremendous £2,005 to support the hospice’s care to patients living with life-limiting illnesses.

The Flourishing Fivers scheme encouraged pupils to become entrepreneurs and turn £5 into as much money as they could for St Richard’s.

Michael Fieldhouse, headteacher at The Chase, said: “The Chase was delighted to work with St Richard’s Hospice in raising money for such a worthy local cause.

“Students were really inspired by the Flourishing Fivers scheme and thought of many creative and innovative ways in which to raise money from the initial £5.

“The most successful money raiser was the ‘gunge the teacher’ competition in which students and staff were asked to donate money to get their favourite teacher ‘gunged’.

“Due to the success of this scheme the school is planning to repeat it during the Spring.”

The Flourishing Fivers scheme was launched in 2005 and over the years has seen schools across Worcestershire raise fantastic amounts to support the Worcester-based hospice.

Jayne Sargeant, fund-raiser at St Richard’s, said: “We were so impressed by the creative fundraising activities at The Chase – all the students got involved and did a fantastic job in raising money for our care.

“The money will go towards helping the hospice provide its specialist care not only to patients, but their loved ones and bereaved people across the county.

“Thank you to the students, teachers, parents and guardians at The Chase for your wonderful support.”
