A MALVERN boy who used his first aid knowledge to spot the first signs of his father’s stroke got to meet HRH The Princess Royal and speak about his experience.
Thomas Coombes was one of more than a hundred young people invited to meet Princess Anne, who is the Commandant in Chief of St John Ambulance, at the charity’s annual Young Achievers’ Reception.
The special event, held at St James’s Palace in London, acknowledged and honoured St John Ambulance badgers, cadets and young carers who have all made ‘outstanding contributions’ and shown commitment to the cause.
Thomas, who is a part of the St John Ambulance Malvern Cadet unit, was nominated to attend the prestigious ceremony after coming to the aid of his dad Peter, last year.
When Peter suffered a stroke his 12-year-old son immediately recognised the symptoms, followed his first aid training and alerted his mother before helping the ambulance take him to hospital.
The youngster then assisted medical staff by providing a detailed account of what had happened.
Thomas said: “I have learnt first aid for the last six years and last year put my skills to the biggest test by helping my dad.
“My day at the palace was amazing – especially the weapons room.
“There was so much to see and it will be a day I’ll always remember.”
Wendy Human, St John Ambulance’s director of charitable initiatives and training, said: “The reception is a great way for us to recognise the commitment and outstanding work of these young people.
“Thomas has been an asset to his local community all year round and fully deserved to be rewarded with this invitation.”
