THOUSANDS of households across Malvern Hills District are at risk of losing the right to vote and facing huge fines because they have yet to confirm their registration on the electoral roll.
Over the next three weeks a team of more than 20 canvassers will be out knocking on the doors of 5,000 households in the district in an attempt to confirm the details of people living there.
Letters were sent out to households across the district in August asking people to respond by phone, text or post to confirm the details held about them on the electoral roll were correct.
Reminders were then sent in September but many have still yet to respond.
Failure to register on the electoral roll could result in a £1,000 fine, damage a person’s credit rating and result in someone being unable to vote in future elections or referendums unless they reregister.
Matt Box, Democratic Services Manager for Malvern Hills District Council, said: “The vast majority of the 35,000 households in the district do return their forms promptly. Our canvassers are there just to remind those yet to do so of the importance of registering on the electoral roll and offering help, if needed, to complete the forms.
“It’s important we give people every opportunity to confirm their registration as failing to do so not only puts them at risk of legal action, but can also affect their ability to get a mortgage, loan or other type of credit. With the Worcestershire County Council elections being held next May it’s also vital people are registered so they can have their say.”
All canvassers will have identification proving they are working for or on behalf of Malvern Hills District Council.
